Daily Dingleberry 03-21-12 I Told You So

Ok I really didn’t think that this was gonna be this fast….Remember when I said that if the MLA kept making an issue out of nothing the backlash wouldn’t be nice? According to a statement made yesterday, it would seem the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples is already dropped. Kaput. Gone.

The following is a direct quote from: http://www.7newsbelize.com/sstory.php?nid=22017

And while we are still on the subject, we have one more bit of news. We note that the announcement on the Moratorium came from the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Sustainable Development. What’s odd about that? Well, there’s no Indigenous People in it! That title appears to have been excised – only days after it was announced.

And it’s not a typo. We checked with senior government sources who indicated Government is rethinking its position of creating such a title after the Mayan Leaders Alliance slammed them last week for doing so without prior consultation. So, the plan now is to first consult, and then proceed – not quite butter for fat, or fish, but apparently a concession by government that it is too early in its term to start quarrelling.

And now there is even more backlash: http://edition.channel5belize.com/archives/68274 where it is being reported that a busload of Maya, on the way to a protest, was turned back for NOT having a charter permit. Of course, no matter that they broke a rule, the incident will no doubt be billed as further proof that the GOB is being disrespectful to the Maya.

So, a ministry that COULD have brought attention and funding to a previously under served sector of our population seems to have been effectively eliminated and now you done gone pissed off the powers that be so they are not gonna let anything you do slide. Classic case of shooting yourself in the foot, cutting your nose off to spite your face, throwing out the baby with the bath water…..

O well…whoever was advising the MLA needs to rethink his/her tactics caz they SUCKED the big one and accomplished nothing but more grief. Yeah for big ass egos!

  1. I wonder though too how effective the ministry of Indigenious People would be. The criticism started because the post was not filled with a Mayan or Garifuna. Then again if a Mayan was appointed the other would complain and visa versa. I still think more can be done by lobbying government than to have one of the two in the position. I know I’m a little off topic….:) just my 2 cents!

    • we can allllllll wonder now cause we’ll never friggin know…there is no way to please anybody it seems…did it occur to anyone that is why they put it under a minister who had other ministries? So as to not appear to have played favourites? u put Maya..Garinagu vex…u put Garinagu? Maya vex. So now? Nuttin…the end.

    • So you should support Dean Barrow cause he is Black and only he can speak for you! Is this the new PUP racism logic?

    • this whole thing is based on a very mean spirited sentiment…we can’t play racism no matter what direction it is aimed…racism erases goodwill, reason, humanity…in the end, it is just hate. And because of an advisor/advisors’ shortsightedness, the MLA will create a lot of animosity for itself and lose credibility.

    • This just stupid…I guess now I see why you won’t put your name…so we won’t know who to laugh at.

    • Just so there’s no ambiguity…my previous commented was in response to Anonymous’ ludicrous comment on PUP racism logic 🙂

    • it is unfortunate that entire orgs are blamed for the words of an individual…BUT when an org sees someone doing things in their name that they feel is not representative of their ideology, it could take steps to address it.

  2. You have a problem with criticism Fayemare …
I note your dislike and consider myself dis-invited.

  3. In your haste to defend and/or promote the Barrow administration you keep getting your “facts” wrong. The Maya Leaders Alliance while protesting the lack of consultation in ONE, SINGLE simple statement, also stated quite clearly that they were prepared to work with the minister/ministry. They did not call for its abolishment/abandonment.
The several issues of environmental conservation, Maya land rights, sustainable development, cultural preservation are entwined and give rise to a complexity that does not support any one point of view as the righteous one.
Note, for example, that just yesterday SATIM, the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIIM) said in a statement that it “applauds and supports the decision of the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, Sustainable Development and Indigenous Peoples to declare a moratorium on harvesting and exportation of Rosewood (Dalbergia stevensonii) on Friday 16 March 2012” even, as you pointed out, some of its members and supporters were demonstrating against the ban.
So while it is easy to hypothesize viz: “a ministry that COULD have brought attention and funding to a previously under served sector of our population”, clearly your premise that the MLA “kept making an issue out of nothing” is as best exaggerated, and your conclusion that the ministry is “effectively eliminated” is contradictory to the very news report you quote which stated pellucidly that “Government is rethinking its position” and “the plan now is to first consult, and then proceed”.

    • Glenn…I didnt say ANY of what you are suggesting…I merely said that if they brought increased negativity to this ministry, there would be backlash. Seriously, you are trying to muddy the waters here and I am not defending anyone. I wanted the MLA to be prudent and fight the right battles that would bring the right results. Apparently, you are unable to recognize a friend and supporter if she doesnt come all wrapped in blue paper and ribbons. Your loss babe.

    • Reply In your haste to defend and/or promote the Barrow administration you keep getting your “facts” wrong – Glenn is clearly still thinking in red or blue –

“Government is rethinking its position” and “the plan now is to first consult, and then proceed”. This tells me that GOB/UDP is being pressured into appeasing The Maya Leaders Alliance. By winning the elections the people elected the Barrow administration for a second term of office. They have given him the mandate to make these decisions. Musa and his GOB/PUP administration were never pressured into appeasing any one group or anything for that matter. Let’s joins forces and fight the good fight for all Belizean people, Maya, Garifuna, Creole, etc. wrapped up in blue paper and blue ribbons or red paper and red ribbons – pretty paper, pretty ribbons! In the end the political parties will have their say but the Belizean people will have their way.

    • mo like naysayers will say and play but the people will go about their way! Let’s dance around the Maypole with all those pretty ribbons friend 🙂 And give the naysayers just enough blue ribbons to hang themselves.
